How Weather Can Affect Rigging Sites

Crane Rigging There are many potential problems that you could encounter when working with a crane. The weather is one of the biggest factors and could play a big role in your ability to use a crane safely. Before you start utilizing a crane to conduct lifts, you should check the weather to see if it will present any issues for you. Here are three weathers conditions that could affect crane rigging sites.

Extreme cold

While most cranes will perform normally in moderately cold temperatures, you do need to watch out for extreme dips in temperature. The various parts of your crane might not work properly when the temperature hits a certain point. You may also need to reduce the amount of weight you lift when it gets cold out, and of course, snow, sleet, hail, and other wintry effects can pop up during the wintertime. These are all things you should be mindful of when working on a rigging site during the colder months.

Rain and other precipitation

If possible, you should avoid using a crane whenever it rains or snows. Outside of the fact that precipitation could potentially make it difficult for a crane operator to see, rain and snow can also create slippery conditions on a rigging site. Consequently, you won’t always be able to get the traction you need. It’s best to use cranes when it’s dry out and when there isn’t any precipitation in the immediate forecast.

Heavy winds

Heavy winds are one of the worst enemies of a crane operator. Winds can cause heavy loads to become unstable during lifts. Winds can also cause cranes themselves to become unsteady, and in some extreme cases, a crane could actually end up tipping over due to winds. This could put both your employees and your equipment at risk. It could also result in extensive property damage and set your project back.
