What is Meant By a Critical Lift?

Critical Lift If you are using a crane on a construction site, it’s incredibly important for you and your employees to take all of the proper safety precautions at all times to reduce the chances of an accident taking place. However, it’s especially important for this to happen when a “critical lift” is being performed, since there is usually an increased risk associated with this type of lift.

There is, unfortunately, no universally accepted definition for what a critical lift is at this time. But the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, better known as OSHA, has laid out some guidelines for what a critical lift entails. The organization has noted that a critical lift is either a lift that exceeds 75 percent of the rated capacity of a crane that is being used on a job site or a lift that calls for the use of more than one crane.

What is a Crane Lift?

Essentially, a critical lift is one that could potentially cause problems if it isn’t conducted according to plan, and further, it’s a lift that requires a more detailed plan overall than a regular lift in order to avoid a catastrophic outcome. Before a critical lift is carried out, a construction company should devise a plan that spells out the weight of a load, the equipment that is going to be used, the angle for the lift, the positioning of the crane, and more. The goal is to make sure the critical lift goes off without a hitch and to keep everyone as safe as they can be throughout the course of the lift. Any and all potential problems should be included in the plan for the lift, and solutions for those issues should be written down as well.
