Boom Trucks Are a Versatile Heavy Equipment Option

30 Ton Boom Truck

For generations, little kids have been quite obsessed with toy cars and trucks. Little boys in particular seem to love to learn about construction vehicles and, better yet, see them in action in real life or at least use their Matchbox and Hot Wheels versions in the dirt in the yard. One particularly cool looking truck is known as a boom truck. Not only does it look cool, but it serves a valuable purpose.

What is a Boom Truck?

A boom truck is a piece of heavy equipment that can be driven on the road and used at construction sites to lift things up and down to where they need to go. So it’s a large truck with a crane on it. The crane can usually lift several dozen tons of capacity and reach 100 to 200 feet in height. A boom truck is like bringing together three things in one: a hydraulic crane, a flatbed truck and a bucket truck. This, in turn, can save money because you get a lot of equipment to be utilized from just one truck.

Uses of Boom Trucks

Not only do boom trucks enable a user to raise heavy loads, but they also can be used to transport materials. When they have “cherry pickers,” that’s essentially a box that lifts a worker high in the air as needed– a nice bonus. Typically, a special gear allows for rotation of the crane and the truck is essentially powered by a strong hydraulic pump. It’s quite a machine!
